Marshall used minimal lighting, to keep things appropriately dark, given both the genre and the fact that the women in the film only have certain sources of light available to them in the cave. This was a low budget film, shot in a purposely gritty style, befitting the setting.
Score: 9 out of 10 The Video The Descent is presented in anamorphic widescreen (1.85:1) preserving the theatrical aspect ratio. This DVD has the original, slightly longer ending, which is much better and more in line with what preceded it in the story. In the US, the film ended differently than it did in its original, overseas incarnation, though in a strange way it simply cut off about 90 seconds of footage, bringing things to a much more abrupt and confusing conclusion. However, it's most notable for its ending. This unrated DVD restores a bit of additional footage and gore not seen in the American theatrical release. There's one or two silly moments along the way - most notably an argument about a missing map - but for the most part, he manages to avoid a lot of the problems inherent in some horror films, instead delivering a well crafted and highly effective piece of work that will satisfy fans of the genre, or anyone looking for a good scare. Marshall definitely makes a name for himself as a filmmaker to watch in the horror world with The Descent.
